Superhive

One of our members, Luciano Scandian from Shoreham-by-Sea, is seen here with his outstanding creation; a Superhive with 13 supers.

He constructed the Superhive by nailing together three National brood bodies to house the daughter of a Brede Valley Queen, mated with local drones, that he believed needed more space.

Making 10 large wired frames (14.5" x 17.5") with two dummy boards either side he provided the space required and the following spring the coloney rapidly built up. These rusty orange bees were very docile (as can be seen from the photographs) and these pictures were taken in July when the coloney had a staggering 13 supers on.

Was it a success? Well, how many of your individual hives produce 324 lbs of honey!
